The Speaking Voice – Judy Marshall

This post is based on the book “The Pursuit of God” by A. W. Tozer

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1

It is the very nature of God to speak, to communicate His thoughts to others. Words express thoughts. The God that came to earth was Himself known as The Word.

The voice of God is a living vibrant entity of its own. By that Voice, the world was created. It is the most powerful force in nature, for all energy is here on earth only because the power-filled Word is being spoken. God SPOKE the world into being.

Chaos heard it and became order. Darkness heard it and became light. God said, “Let there be,” and it was.

God did not write a book and send it by messenger… He spoke a Book and lives in His spoken words, constantly speaking His words and causing the power of them to continue forever. A good book written by a God inspired man, will educate and even touch the emotions, but the Bible has the power of God woven into its words. It has the power to change you. To calm, refresh, encourage, convict and affect the heart and soul, not just the mind.

But where we accept by faith the Bible as the written Word of God, it is limited by ink and paper. The voice of God, however, is alive and free as the sovereign God is free. Jesus said, “The words that I speak unto you, they are Spirit, and they are Life.” The life is in the speaking words.

Prophets habitually said, “Thus saith the Lord” which indicates that God’s speaking voice is in the continuous present.

Whoever will listen will hear the speaking Voice of God. The facts are: God is NOT silent. He has never been silent, It is the nature of God to speak. Whoever will listen will hear the speaking Voice of God. “My sheep listen to My Voice… and they follow Me.”

God says, “Be still, and know that I am God” and He is still saying it. It is as if He means to tell us that our strength and safety lie not in noise, but in silence.

It is important that we learn to become still in order to hear His Voice.

The Bible is more than a thing; it is more than a book. It is a Voice, a Word, the very Word of the Living God.

Lord, teach me to listen. The times are noisy and my ears are weary with the thousand raucous sounds which continuously assault them. Give me the spirit of the boy Samuel when he said to You, “Speak, for your servant heareth.” Let me hear You speaking in my heart. Let me get use to the sound of Your Voice, that its tones may be familiar when the sounds of earth die away and the only sound will be the music of Your speaking Voice. Amen

  1. I am anxiously awaiting a post from last night’s discussion from Chapter 9- Meekness & Rest. Wowsers…really spoke to me!!! I have a song that I cannot get out of my head that I think paints a BEAUTIFUL picture of what it is really like to come to God and REST. It is called, “If I Could Just Sit With You a While” by Dennis Jernigan. I was going to try to post a link so you could go directly to it, but I can’t. So…go to youtube.com and search the song and the artist. Pick the one where it is just Dennis sitting at the piano talking at first, then he sings the song with the lyrics. VERY POWERFUL!!! Hope it touches you like it has me many times!

Peace and blessings to you all!
