Sovereign – Judy Marshal

This post is based off of the book “The Knowledge of the Holy” by A.W. Tozer.

God’s sovereignty is the attribute by which He rules His entire creating, and to be sovereign God must be all-knowing, all-powerful, and absolutely free.

Why?

One datum of knowledge unknown by God equals a sovereignty break down. If He lacked one speck of knowledge, that lack would end His Kingdom. One atom of power belonging to someone else, would limit God’s power and therefore He would not be sovereign.

Only God is free. Every creature and every person on this planet is dependent on someone or something outside of self. God is self sufficient therefore He is sovereign.

Admittedly this raises certain problems which Doug covered in a recent sermon. Basically Doug stated that, we don’t have all the answers. There are things present in creation of which God cannot approve such as evil, pain, and death. He could have prevented all of these things, but He chose not to.

Another problem with Sovereignty that we may encounter is the free will of man. If God rules His universe by His sovereign decrees, how then is it possible for man to exercise free choice? One thing that we do know is that God has decreed that all who willingly commit themselves to His Son Jesus Christ in obedience of faith shall receive eternal life and become sons of God. He has also decreed that all who love darkness and continue in rebellion against the High Authority of Heaven shall remain in a state of spiritual separation and suffer eternal death. Whoever is with God cannot lose, and whoever is against God can not win. There is freedom to choose which side to be on, but there is no freedom to negotiate the results of the choice once this choice is made. By mercy and grace we can repent and alter the consequences by making new and right choices that align us with God.

Through this Chapter, God gave Judy a message that He wanted us to know. Here is God’s message to us:
I want to be sovereign in your life.
I want you to know Me.
I desire to have a personal relationship with you
that is filled with My love for you personally.
Knowing I am sovereign in the universe is not enough.
Knowing I am sovereign in your life is a life worth living,
Full of Love Joy and Peace.
Acknowledge Me.

  1. Was anyone else apprehensive when Tozer started giving the boat analogy? I was so relieved and enlightened when he stated that we are all traveling to one destination, the end of time, The Second Coming. I love that he states that it is our choice to do with that “end time” whatever we wish, but that we can’t change that the end will be the end. It reminds me of the portion of the Voyage of the Dawn Treader when Reepicheep says:

“My own plans are made. While I can, I sail east in the Dawn Treader. When she fails me, I paddle east in my coracle. When she sinks, I shall swim east with my four paws. And when I can swim no longer, if I have not reached Aslan’s country, or shot over the edge of the world into some vast cataract, I shall sink with my nose to the sunrise.”
