Psalm 19 A Psalm of David – Judy Marshall

The origins of the song I want to teach you and sing tonight is well over 3000 years old! It’s from the Bible and was written by King David.

David is portrayed in the Biblical tradition as a composer, singer, instrumentalist, court Musician, personal musician to the King, and of course, David also loved to dance. He was born and raised in Bethlehem. He was the youngest of 8 boys. As a youngster he was known as a shepherd. It was there he probably met the Lord and had a very personal relationship that grew deeper and deeper as he matured. The Psalms seem to indicate that he related to God through a series of journaling. Throughout his lifetime, we find snippets of him constantly crying out to God in his needs. He probably wrote hundreds of lyrics and songs. God chose 71 of David’s personal lyrics to record in Holy Scripture. They have been read and perhaps sung by millions of people of every nation, race, and language in the world over a period of 3,000 years. Music was written in David’s heart and soul. His entire lifetime, recorded in scripture, included music.

Psalm 43, is one of many examples of David crying out to God, but by the end of the his psalm, he is walking in praise.

O God, defend me from the charges of these merciless, deceitful men. For you are God, my only place of refuge.Why must I mourn at the oppression of my enemies?Oh, send out your light and your truth – let them lead me to your Temple. There I will go to the altar of God, my exceeding joy, and praise Him with my harp. O God—my God! Oh my soul why be so downcast and discouraged?Trust in God! I shall again praise Him for His wondrous help…for He is my God! LB

As a soldier and mighty warrior, leader of vast armies, David brought his complaints to God concerning military situations. He was the king to unite Israel and Judah and the first to receive the promise of a royal Messiah in his line. David ruled as king for 40 years.

In the New Testament, Jesus was the Son of God, but at least 12 times the gospels refer to Jesus also as “the Son of David”. David took his place in the Roll Call of Faith in Hebrews. Paul, in one of his great sermons, stated God’s call on David’s life….“This was David the son of Jesse, a man after My heart, who will carry out all my will”.

When a person is asked to read scripture, there is a sheet of paper back stage that explains how to begin and end the readings. The first one gives many scriptures to exalt God’s Word…..

This song – (Psalm 19) exalts God’s Word in a mighty way

Notice the make up of this powerful Psalm

In 3 verses:
There are 6 titles for the Word Of God

There are 6 characteristics of God’s Word and His own character

There are 6 Blessings for trusting His Word

PSALM 19:7-10

7 The Law of the Lord is perfect

converting the soul;

The Testimony of the Lord is sure,

making wise the simple.

8 The Statues of the Lord are right

rejoicing the heart

The Commandment of the Lord is pure,

enlightening the eyes

9 The fear of the Lord is clean

enduring forever

The judgments of the Lord are true

and righteous altogether.

10 More to be desired are they than gold,

Yea than much fine gold;

Sweeter also than honey

and the honey comb.
