“The Knowledge of the Holy” discussion – Jennifer Chlumsky

This post is based off of the book “The Knowledge of the Holy” by A.W. Tozer

As choir and orchestra come to a close this season, we will take a brief pause in our study of “The Knowledge of the Holy.” But if I may, I would like to take you back to Chapter 1 for reflection.

Tozer states: “The gravest question before the Church is always God Himself, and the most portentous fact about any man is not what he at a given time may say or do, but what he in his deep heart conceives God to be like.” He then goes on to say: “There is scarcely an error in doctrine or a failure in applying Christian Ethics that cannot be traced finally to imperfect and ignoble thoughts about God.”

In other words, the greatest responsibility of the church and the individual Christian is to have correct beliefs about God. It is these beliefs that shape our ethics and relationship with Him. If our beliefs about God are incorrect, our faith life will be full of errors.

So, after reading, studying, re-reading, and finally listening to humble explanations of the chapters, how has your belief in the attributes of God changed? And how has that affected your relationship with Him?

I would like to open up this question for discussion. Answer as much or as little as you feel lead. I look forward to being encouraged by your spiritual growth.

  1. I feel I have grown so much from our discussion of this challenging book this year. The idea that none of God’s attributes supersedes, overshadows, or outweighs the others was really new to me, and it surprised me that this concept was new to me, a *supposedly* “mature” Christian who has been walking with the Lord for several years now. When Judy challenged us to not pray for others by asking God to be with them– He is always/already with them!– it totally changed the way I pray. I am more specific in my prayers now. I also feel that developing a more accurate understanding of who God is has changed my response to so many things and especially how I respond to/feel about the things that I don’t understand in my life or in the lives of others i.e. what I see as undeserved pain or problems. I look forward to implementing what I’ve taken from the presentations and conversations during devotions this year as I continue in my spiritual walk.
